Mission and Organizers
Both the annual CW02 Online Conference and the Computers and Writing 2002 Conference (also called the "onsite" conference) are dedicated to promoting the art and science of teaching computer-assisted writing of all genres. The mission of the online conference is to extend the "onsite" conference goals and mission as well as enhance it by reaching out to potential attendees who cannot for some reason or another travel tothe onsite conference. Ron Fortune and Jim Kalmbach, Illinois StateUniversity, are chairs of the Computers and Writing 2002 Conference; DeneGrigar, Texas Woman's University, the CW02 Online Conference.

Technologies and Logistics
As in the past, the CW02 Online Conference will utilize several technologies for disseminating information and building community---and it will add others not previously used to continue expanding its reach outside the current CW Community.

First, we will offer a virtual conference site where attendees will present research, view online performances together, and meet casually in special events (see below for more information about the virtual site). Second, we will use video and audio clips to provide information and special announcements to conference attendees. Third, we will host ongoing topical discussions and debates via listservs. Lastly, we will offer a conference website for providing information to the community.

Location and Date
The CW02 Online will be held at Nouspace, a virtual environment that cater to educational and non-profit service organizations, as well as in listservs generating from Nouspace. Administrators for Nouspace include Dene Grigar and John Barber, as well as volunteers and members of the Nouspace community. Technical support is provided by Eaze.net, an internet service provider.

The CW02 Online Conference lasts 6 weeks, from Sunday, April 14 and ends Sunday, May 25, 2002.

The Virtual Conference Site in Nouspace
Nouspace is powered by enCORE and, therefore, offers an environment that synthesizes "chat" with the "web." Participants at the CW02 Online Conference will be able to chat online with other attendees while accessing full color images, streaming video, audio, and animation. As in "real life" the online conference will take place in a "series of rooms" where events and presentations will be held. Also included are a "virtual exhibit hall," "virtual performance hall, and other spaces for showcasing research and educational products as well as building community among participants.

Events and Programs
The following is a list of Proposed Events and Programs planned for the CW02 Online Conference:

  1. A Multimedia Electronic Literature Series: Webcasts of experimental video created by internet artists. These events will be held in the electronic performance hall in Nouspace.
  2. Web Around the World Exhibit. A special viewing of the submissions for the Web Around the World Contest.
  3. Online Strand Discussions. Listservs created for each strand so that participants can discuss research prior to and following the onsite conference.
  4. Online Discussions of Research. In the online conference site, we will archive abstracts of research in appropriate virtual "chat rooms." In this way, participants, conference attendees, and other interested parties can come online to the site, read the abstract, and "chat" about the material with other participants present in the room or send comments back to the abstract's author via email.
  5. Meet the Keynoters. A special event designed to introduce the Keynoters for the onsite conference to the CW Community in advance to that conference. Materials relating to these keynoters found on the web will be made available to the participants in the meeting room for further study.
  6. Online Workshops. Online workshops in the following areas: Using a particular educational software program, Mentoring (graduate students, junior faculty); Writing a dissertation and master's thesis prospectus; Teaching at a distance with a MOO; Web design; and Grant-writing.
  7. Graduate Research Network: An extension of the onsite Graduate Research Network.
  8. MOO Grazer. An evening event in which participants will "graze" through various educational MOOs listening to special presentations and participating in short mini-workshops. There will be a fee to participate, and all money generated by these fees goes to the graduate student and adjunct faculty fund.
  9. Online Keynoter Series. A series of formal online presentations by well-known figures in the field of technology and composition, as well as others representing the strands listed above.

Participatation in the CW02 Online Conference
Requirements for attendees to join the online events include only a computer with access to a browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, email service, and an internet connection. Volunteers will be on hand to assist those unfamiliar with the technologies utilized for the online conference with accessing data and communicating in the sessions. Participation in the conference is *free* for all attendees.
