Authors featured in Digital Defoe retain copyright of their work and may republish their text in electronic or print form if they acknowledge Digital Defoe as the site of original publication. Authors of accepted text or multimedia submissions agree to allow Digital Defoe the right to publish and distribute their work electronically on the journal site, in the online archives, and on CD-ROM. Authors also grant Digital Defoe the right to reference and feature their work in promotional materials. Digital Defoe, including its design, interface, content, and features, is copyrighted and not under the ownership or restrictions of any individual or institution. Digital Defoe is the collective vision of the current editorial staff, members of The Defoe Society, and the international community of Defoe and interested scholars. Digital Defoe holds a Creative Commons License that states that anyone is free to copy, distribute, display, or perform Digital Defoe under the following conditions: the original author(s) and journal is contacted and receives credit; the work is not used for commercial purposes; and the new work is held under the same copyright policies as Digital Defoe. For example, screenshots or extensive reference to Digital Defoe require notification of the journal editors and, if the material is from an authored essay, teaching resource, review, dissertation, or multimedia presentation, notification of both the journal editors and the author is necessary. Digital Defoe encourages authors to obtain a Creative Commons license, described in more detail under our Submission Guidelines, which will allow them to declare what rights (if any) they are willing to grant to others to make use of their work. Authors who apply for a CC license, however, do still grant Digital Defoe the rights listed above.
