Beginning a paper is often the most difficult task that students face while they are composing; therefore, the following exercises and assignments are designed to help students get past that first stage. Remember, though, that even with brainstorming exercises, unless students receive guidance in translating the results into a composition, those students will still have difficulty beginning the composing process.
