Background and Research Interests

I am a professor of Technical Communication in the Department of English at Illinois State University. The major focus of my research is the visual communication of technical information. Currently, I am researching the use of visual communication in the medical arena. My research focuses on the communication between the obstetric sonographer and the pregnant woman during the sonogram exam, as I examine the complexity involved in this kind of technical communication.

Teaching Interests

I am interested in technical communication from a variety of standpoints. I regularly teach Technical Writing I and Technical Writing II, classes in which I try to introduce students to not only the major genres of Technical Communication but also the complexity of communication in the workplace. Workplaces are changing all the time; electronic communication, global communication and group communication all contribute to these changes. I have also taught courses in Visible Rhetoric, Technical Editing, and Language and Composition.
