Featured Speaker -- Dr. Susan Burt
How to Get Rid of Unwanted Suitors
Wednesday, March 23rd 1:00-2:30
Refreshments will be served at 2:00
Where: STV 133
Comparing responses across genders and generations, Professor Susan Burt will focus on what speakers in an immigrant community advise young women to say in a face-threatening situation. Expressive literature written in English by young authors in this ethnic group reveal surprising evaluations of response types.
Dr. Burt earned her BA in Anthropology at Bryn Mawr College, and her MA and PhD in Linguistics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She has published on Japanese, English, Hmong and on German-English codeswitching. She tests consistently as an INTJ on the Myers-Briggs personality assessment, and lives on Normal Avenue, where she bakes bread and tries to grow lettuce.
