Creative Writing & Publishing Club

The Creative Writing & Publishing Club at U-High is for students interested in creative writing, editing, and magazine and book publishing. A partnership between English teacher Cassandra Graham and the Publications Unit, the Club features:

  • Writing workshops for students interested in learning the art and craft of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction writing
  • Information about publishing opportunities and contests for high school writers
  • Editing workshops with professional book and magazine editors
  • Learning book and magazine design and production while working on nationally distributed publications
  • Editing and production of Brome and Beyond Literary Magazine, the U-High student-run literary journal, during the spring semester

Brome and Beyond Literary Magazine

University High School's Brome and Beyond is a student-edited, student-produced annual magazine that publishes outstanding poetry, fiction, essays, and art written or created by current U-High students. From 2008 to 2014, Brome and Beyond has competed statewide with other high school literary magazines in the National Council of English Educator's Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines. It has consistently ranked among the best of the best, twice earning the highest honor bestowed. The faculty sponsor for Brome and Beyond is Mrs. Cassandra Graham.

Downstate Legacies Books

Downstate Legacies is a small press that publishes books by authors in Central Illinois. Produced by the Publications Unit and the Creative Writing & Publishing Club at U-High, the editorial, production, marketing, and distribution for the books is done by students under the direction of Publications Unit staff.
