Department of English at Illinois State University

Teaching Writing

Ever since the ISU English doctorate was approved by the state (as a doctorate in the Teaching of English), the teaching of writing has been among the foremost subjects of dissertations and these in the department. Doctoral students' dissertations have included investigations of the researcher's own teaching and the learning of the researcher's own classes, as well as research into the teaching of others and the writing development of students in a wider community. Dissertations also investigate theories about what the teaching of writing has been, is now, and could be in the future. Graduate student researchers have looked at writing both within the boundaries of U.S. and in other countries and cultures as well. The department welcomes graduate students interested in expanding the boundaries of research in the teaching and learning of writing.
