Welcome to English 495, an on-line course in Marxist cultural theory. This is a 3-credit hour course for graduate students at Illinois State University, and open for transfer credit to graduate students at other institutions as well.

In the summer of 2007 the course will be taught in conjunction with the Marxist Literary Group's annual Institute for Culture and Society. The Institute, which will be held from June 20-24 at the University of Illinois-Chicago, will feature a series of group discussions of Marx and Engels' economic and cultural theory focusing on Capital.

The readings for the first three weeks of the course will introduce students to the basic Marxist concepts related to problems of ideology and culture. The readings for the fourth week will comprise the material to be discussed by the group at the Institute for Culture and Society. Students who don't attend the institute, of course, can participate online in the normal way. Participants in the Institute are welcome to audit the entire course, or any part of it. If you are not enrolled at Illinois State University and you would like to take the course for transfer credit, click on this link for an application form and information on how to register. The tuition for the 3-credit hour course is $555 and there is an additional "outreach" fee of $157.35 for the internet course. The good news in this is that students from outside of Illinois don't have to pay out-of-state tuition.
