In the summer of 2007 the course will be taught in conjunction with the Marxist Literary Group's annual Institute for Culture and Society. The Institute, which will be held from June 20-24 at the University of Illinois-Chicago, will feature a series of group discussions of Marx and Engels' economic and cultural theory focusing on Capital.
The readings for the first three weeks of the course will introduce students to the basic Marxist concepts related to problems of ideology and culture. The readings for the fourth week will comprise the material to be discussed by the group at the Institute for Culture and Society. Students who don't attend the institute, of course, can participate online in the normal way. Participants in the Institute are welcome to audit the entire course, or any part of it.
