Overview
Our unique PhD program focuses on theorizing pedagogies that are situated within a broadly conceived English Studies model. Students develop an area of specialization and explore the connections between that specialization and other areas within the program, listed below. PhD dissertation projects, including the creative dissertation option, require a pedagogical component.
Students in our program are interdisciplinary, then, but also specialize, ready for fulfilling careers in Children's Literature, Creative Writing, English Education, Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies, Rhetoric and Writing (including New Media Studies, Professional Writing and Rhetorics, Rhetoric and Composition, and Teaching Writing), and TESOL.
The department maintains high placement rates for students completing our graduate programs. More than 90% of our PhD graduates have found full-time positions in secondary or higher education or careers beyond academia.
